Today the kids took some time on Good Friday to walk through the outskirts of Denmark to clean up the roadside. Since they had no school today, they chose to meet at 10 am to get some work done. What a gorgeous day it was to be outside! We met at the McDonalds and talked over what our next activities would be - check those out in the upcoming events tab! The youth then proceeded outside to the parking lot and cleaned up some of the trash they found. As they climbed a hill in the back, they startled a Killdeer on her nest. I am not sure who was more surprised, but it sure was funny to watch the kids scramble down that hill once the bird raised a fuss! They then proceeded down County R until they reached North Avenue. They then turned east and proceeded to clear up trash along the city street. We ended up just east of the High School and collected around 8 bags of garbage! Great job by all who participated.
What a great event! The goal for the day was to clear the back of the Rovnost National Cemetery in order to facilitate the new plots that were sold there. Randy Kolarik drove the tractor to the cemetery in advance to start cutting down the sumac trees. wfla Lodge 108 President (Mike Steinberger) and the lodge treasurer (Mary Kvitek) arrived early to assist in the initial clearing of the cemetery. The kids arrived and began to haul the brush out of the cleared area. Randy and Mike used the tractor to pull out the large roots, but the kids decided to pull out the smaller roots by hand. I don't believe they realized how long sumac roots could be - but it was great to watch them find out! The group also took the time to rake up the gravel along the ditch and road in order to make the lawn mowing easier. The kids had so much fun that the time passed really quickly and before we knew it - the project was done. Check out the pictures on the events page.
